Scenario AGSU007

This 4 map scenario has an under strength Romanian division holding a wide frontage against far superior Soviet numbers. This is an infantry battle not an AFV in sight, though both side have on board and off board artillery. The VC are slightly unusual in that losses are hardly considered, the Soviet player should try and not lose 20 steps as that will give a minor victory to the axis, other VC concern Soviet exiting steps getting units onto the east-west roads. The Romanian set up was two lines of defence centred around the town on board 10/22 with a Cav reserve in the centre, the plan was to fall back slowly avoiding assaults and hoping to cause casualties. The Red Army commander had a better plan, dividing his force into 4 groups each led by a senior officer, the two flanking forces consisting of nine INF platoons supported by A/T guns were to avoid combat and head for the south, the two other forces were assigned to hold the Romanian defenders in place ensuring that the exiting units would not be harried by Romanian troops. This plan worked well, the leading Axis troops were overrun by Soviet assault units which meant that by GT15 already 20 steps had been exited for the loss of only approx. 150 meanwhile inflicting more than 300 on their Romanian foes. The Romanian CAV reserve did launch a cavalry charge which was the highlight of the battle for the Axis although it still resulted eventually in the destruction of those brave hussars, they did delay the Soviet major victory by a couple of turns. Just a little to unbalanced for my liking not a bad scenario though for a solo play, I think the Romanian player would need a large dose of luck to win this one.
