Introduction

Years before the German invasion, Polish military planners had set down a doctrine derived from their victory over the Soviet Union. Cavalry brigades would slow the enemy's advance , and infantry would then counter-attack. Along the Bzura River, the Polish Army Poznan put theory into practice, the only time the Poles held an actual advantage in numbers in a major battle of the September Campaign.

Conclusion

The initial Polish attacks caught the Germans by surprise and were very successful. Fighting for once "when the odds were even," the Poles routed 30th Infantry Division and took over 1,500 prisoners. But the Germans eventually responded, and within a week had re-established numerical superiority and were using their armored and mechanized forces to crush Army Poznan.

Scenario WhEa005

September 9th the Polish army counterattacks the Germans at night. The goal was to capture one of the north/south roads and loose less steps than the Germans. Visibility was two hexes for all but the last few turns. The battlefield was rather large for the forces available which presented opportunities for quite a bit of movement. Poles sent a diversion force down the West road and used the bulk of their forces to capture the East road. The Germans defended in depth fighting to slow the advance before falling back. The West road diversion force tied up enough Germans to allow for the stronger East road force to overwhelm the defenders killing some and forcing the other back. In the end the Poles captured the East road on turn 41 (out of 44) and had done a good job killing Germans.
