Introduction

Almost every Austrian unit obeyed its orders to offer no resistance to the incoming German forces. But at Bregenz, at the far western end of Austria, the garrison's officers could not abide Nazi rule. When Germans came marching on the small city expecting the flower-bearing maidens found elsewhere, the 6th Division met them with bullets

Conclusion

Only after receiving a direct order from the Defense Ministry did the jägers stand down from their defense of Bregenz. It would be the last official combat action for Austrian forces

Additional Notes

The Gebirgsjäger HMG is more appropriate for use in the 98th Gebirgs Regiment than the regular Heer counter.

Austrian Army counters are on the back of the Tank Battles book. I suggest using Hopeless, But Not Serious counters because I do not like to cut up my books. Making counters from a good color copy is also an option.

If Hopeless, But Not Serious counters are not available, Avalanche Press still hosts DYI Austrian leader counters for download.

Use SS Officers from Edelweiss or Edelweiss Expanded for the SA officers.

Avalanche Press still hosts DYI German Gebirgs leaders for download. Players without Edelweiss Exp & IV, or Parachutes over Crete, may wish to use these counters instead of regular Heer leaders.

Germans are told where to enter, but not when. Presumably this is beginning on turn 1.

Scenario TaBa010

This one is largely unbalanced in favor of the Austrians, just like pretty much any scenario in the system that involves Austrians. That being said there are a few interesting meta decisions made on how to play this one out, so I gave it a 3 instead of a normal 2.

Germans are going to be entering the map and walking down the road into a semi scripted Austrian ambush. They have to limit casualties and take over the town. Pretty standard stuff for early PG. The scripted bit is interesting. The Germans must walk down the road until they get shot at, or are let on board 10 by the Austrians. So they must determine which unit will be the sacrifice, and how the column will be appearing prior to receiving fire.

Germans decide to sacrifice a GEB platoon to receive the ambush, knowing that they are squishy any way, and wanting to conserve their real force for the actual fight. Austrians are ready, with a X3 HMG stack and neighboring INF stacks with combat modifier leaders ready to skewer whatever walks down the road. Austrians cant just sit back though, they must eliminate steps themselves to reach their VCs.

Germans walk into the ambush, and the GEB survives due to luck, but ends up demoralized. The column, which was headed by the SS and followed by the real guys scatters, SS fleeing north into the woods trying to just avoid the battle, and the MTN troops heading south to approach the town through the woods as a safe approach. Austrians play aggressively and pursue the fleeing SS with 4 x INF and through some good initiative rolls are able to wipe them out in assualt combat. The whole SS company, which isnt a huge deal, but achieves their VC. The rest head south to set up a new line to combat the MTN troops, with plans to eventually fall back to the town.

German mountain force does fight through the woods, and with strong DF fire from their own HMG's are able to reduce heavy weapons of the Austrians. The returning INF in the north and the artillery in the town end up being too much for the unsupported MTN troops to run off though, and it end with an Austrian victory.
