Introduction

In early February 1938, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler summoned his Austrian counterpart, Kurt Schuschnigg, to Hitler's mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden. There, Hitler berated the Austrian and demanded that Austria install a Nazi-friendly government. Schuschnigg refused, and Hitler in turn would not let him leave. As no communication came from their leader, Austrian officers of the 8th Infantry Brigade headquartered a few kilometers away in Salzburg became concerned. Maj. Gen. Kurt Zborzil, appointed to the post just two weeks before, called his senior officers together. If no word came soon of Schuschnigg's fate, his brigade would storm the Eagle's Nest, free their chancellor and "kill the little bastard."

Conclusion

Schuschnigg returned before Zborzil led his troops over the border. The chancellor was physically unharmed but spiritually broken. Forty years later, 8th Brigade officers still spoke wistfully of the lost opportunity to destroy Hitler before he unleashed his madness. However, if unsuccessful it would have plunged Austria into an utterly hopeless war.

Additional Notes

Austrian Army counters are on the back of the Tank Battles book. I suggest using Hopeless, But Not Serious counters because I do not like to cut up my books. Making counters from a good color copy is also an option.

If Hopeless, But Not Serious counters are not available, Avalanche Press still hosts DYI Austrian leader counters for download.

Use SS Officers from Edelweiss or Edelweiss Expanded for the SA officers.

Avalanche Press still hosts DYI German Gebirgs leaders for download. Players without Edelweiss Exp & IV, or Parachutes over Crete, may wish to use these counters instead of regular Heer leaders.

Scenario TaBa009

This is a very unique situation that is unfortunately spoiled by morale 9 Austrians. Morale 9 really doesn't work in the PG system as they are just too tough. As many of the casualties generated in this system are due to compound demoralization, morale 9 armies effectively have body armor in addition to being generally unshakeable. Additionally, both sides get to hand pick half their leaders, so the morale 9 Austrians are even better off. At least they dont get the +1 modifier that Finns and Japanese do on top of this....

Anyways, regardless of the unique situation including both chancellors being on the map, this was a mundane play as nothing is going to stop those Austrians. The German bicycle troops set up a one turn roadblock on the town closest to the Austrian entry, hoping to stack up and hope to roll a 2 for OP fire, then run backwards to the join the SS in their defense of the Eagle's nest. That's really all they can hope for. They don't get good rolls, and initiative falls to the Austrians turn 2, so they pin 2 platoons of bikes which are quickly eliminated by the advancing blob. The rest fall back to set up an extended defensive line.

As the Austrians have 30 turns to move in and kill Hitler or free their dude, they take their time and advance through the woods in good order. They then push aside the SS defenders with little casualties. I hope the rewrite works better in HBNS as this could otherwise be fun.
