In a pre-dawn attack on December 11, 1942, the divisional reconnaissance battalion of the 195th Rifle Division had infiltrated Italian lines and took a fortified hill east of Kranoye-Orekhovoye. The position was subjected to numerous counter attacks by the local German and Italian formations. |

After two days of holding out against constant attacks, the Soviet division finally managed to move one of its rifle regiments to reinforce the foothold on the heights on December 14. A second regiment joined the first the next day and all was ready for the opening of the offensive on December 16. |

The Soviets were dug in along the hill in mutually supporting positions. The Soviets took a major hit early when both of their mortar platoons were destroyed. The Germans and Italians advanced while their OBA works over one entrenchment at the end of the Soviet line. As they closed, the Germans/Italians were disrupted some by Soviet fire. The Germans were able to take one Soviet entrenchment, but were unable to gain any more ground. Soviet victory. |
