Parachutes Over Crete Base Game
Introduction

After linking up with a lost company from 3rd Battalion, von der Heydte led his battalion out of Perivolia to the east, toward the village of Mournies. There another Greek regiment awaited, reinforced by local Cretans eager to get at the invaders. The paratroopers lacked heavy weapons and artillery support, but then, so did the Greeks.

Conclusion

Rather than await the German advance, the Greeks attacked the paratroopers as soon as they spotted them. The Germans had no heavy weapons and their air support had been shifted to a different sector. Not hindered by marauding aircraft, the Greeks took the fight to the enemy well before they reached Mournies. The Germans suffered heavy casualties and pulled back to Perivolia, claiming to have taken 200 prisoners.

Additional Notes

Greece does not have a Lt. Colonel in the counter mix, use the Greek Colonel in his place.

The production print of map 98 is missing 3 town hexes, Avalanche press has created a Map 98 overlay to correct this oversight. Philippe Leonard has also created a very nice overlay for map 98 on Board Game Geek.

Scenario PoCr014

...It is a large village on Crete located in Prison Valley. It was attacked and captured my heart in the afternoon of May 20, 1941 after the Ayla Prison was invested by the Germans. Mournies was not necessarily a difficult situation to size up tactically and deal with, but just a matter of slugging it out with the Greeks. So far, this straightforward attack methodology was not that bad for the Germans. The battle itself was not house-to-house in Mournies or Perivolta but against the Greek 2nd Infantry dug-in a N-S line on board 98 east of Perivolta. The Greeks adopted a defensive position that was remarkably close to the position laid out in reality.

Unfortunately, the Greek infantry is weak; with each platoon at 3-2 attack-range, there is simply no more to say in analyzing the problem through three scenarios within the 1st Prison Valley mini-campaigns than to admit glaring deficiencies in organizational makeup. The total steps for each was not getting counted, but the Greek forces must have been at least twice as under strength as it’s enemy, with poorer training and equipment. Second, rifle range is less = 2 to 3. At a third more distance in range, the German piece iris a key in providing more firepower.
