Introduction

The Soviet Union had been developing a modern tank doctrine when Stalin’s paranoia took a brutal turn. With the officer corps denuded of initiative, the Red Army threw its formations into battle with little imagination or flexibility. This situation was amplified in the armor corps. Tanks were often committed against the well-led combined arms formations of the German invaders, frequently with disastrous results. Here Soviet armor attempts to engage an unscouted German position which is supported by armor and anti-tank guns.

Conclusion

This scenario is intended to demonstrate the assignment and masking of tank leaders, and hiding and unhiding units. It is also good for configuring multiple maps.

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).

The Germans set up in the two fields on Board 5 with the ATGs facing east and the west approach guarded by the Pz IIIHs.

The commies came from the east with eh T-34s going after the north field and the BT-7s going after the southern field. The BT-7s tried to outflank the Germans but took heavy losses. The T-34s killed a step of the PzIIIH platoon in their objective and chased it down for the final kill. But there was no way to get another two steps to meet their VCs. The Germans killed six steps of Bt7s for the win.

Now this is what I like. Tanks hurling shells at each other. A little wonky playing solo with the hidden rules. I wrote an app. to pull random markers and it worked pretty well. At least there was some level of unknown. I let the Germans pass too many times in fear of the T-34s, forgetting that the Germans needed step losses to win and couldn't just hide out for the win. They did manage to hit some BT-7s and get close to victory but should have been more aggressive. Particularly, when the 37mm AT ended up way out of the battle it should have limbered up immediately and tried to get into the action.. In retrospect it would have been better for the PzIIIs to gang up on the BT-7s and go for as many hits and step losses as possible as quickly as possible.

Tank Incursion

Tank Incursion is Scenario Three of the PG Uber Mentoring Scenarios. It is short scenario and basic in its scope. It was designed to demonstrate the assignment and masking of tank leaders. It also gets the trainee used to configuring multiple maps. The maps consist of varying terrain such as forests, a river, a road, fields and hills. As such is good for demonstrating the hiding and unhiding of units along with the requisite maneuvering associated with it. I still find it beneficial to my progress to be alternating the PG Uber Mentoring Scenarios with the An Army at Dawn scenarios.

The Soviet’s objective in this mentoring scenario is to hunt down and eliminate 6 German steps with tanks counting double.

The German objective is to kill 5 Soviet steps with T34-a’s counting double.

I played Tank Incursion as the Soviets.

Background

Stalin’s paranoia threw the Soviet’s developing modern tank doctrine out the window. With the Soviet officer corps’ initiative crushed, the Red Army threw its formations into battle with little imagination and, more importantly, no flexibility. This situation was much worse in the Soviet armor corps. Tanks were disastrously committed against the well led combined arms formations of the German invaders. In Tank Incursion, Soviet armor attempts to engage an unscouted German position supported by armor and aiti-tank guns.

Played on maps 4 and 5, the Soviets chose to enter on the eastern edge of the map.

Game Length: 5 Turns First Turn: 1100 Hrs Other: Town Hex on map 4 treated as woods. A road connects Hexes 0610 to 0810.

Engagement

The Germans set up as follows:

• The Germans set up hidden in the hills and fields north and south of the road on map 5.

The Soviets entered as follows:

• The Soviets entered on the east side of map 5 in a fairly balanced broad approach.

• A T-34a taking cover in the woods in the northeast corner of map 5 north of the road and east of the river.

• A T-34a and a BT7 taking cover in the eastern 2 Hexes of the wood in the southeastern corner of map 5, with the T-34a in the Hex directly north of the BT7.

• 2 BT7s made a broad approach entering on the eastern edge of the east-west road in the center of the maps, traveling west with one BT7 on the road and the other in the adjacent Hex directly north.

• A T-34a followed along the road two Hexes behind those two BT’s.

• A BT7 entered to the south of the woods in the south-eastern corner of map 5 keeping even with the two leading BT7s on the road to the north.

As the leading Soviet units along the road moved to contact by pressing west, the Germans on the hill to the north and the field to the south became visible.

At this point the German units on the hill to the north of the road, including PzIIIh’s, 50mm, and 37mm AT guns, engaged and destroyed the two leading BT7’s…the one on the road leaving a wreck blocking the road.

The southernmost Soviet T-34a left the cover of the forest and headed due west to the south-eastern corner of the southern field and engaged the PzIIIh north of it in the small field immediately south of the road, disrupting it.

The remaining BT7 from that same forest maneuvered west and joined that T-34a forming a 2 stack in the same Hex southeast of the southern field.

The remaining BT7 moved to the west south of the southern field and entered it on the south-western corner, flanking the PZIIIh in the small field to the north.

The T-34a that was in the forest Hex in the northeastcorner of the map crossed the small river and flanked the hill to the north.

The T-34a on the road engaged and demoralized the destroyed the PzIIIh in the small field south of the road.

The T-34a flanking the hill to the north endured a withering assault from 2x German INF Platoons, disrupting half of them.

The maneuvering in and out of cover and concealment continued for both sides as the German PzIIIh redeployed from the hill north of the road to the small field south of the road, and the Soviet T-34a and the two BT7s that were south of the road maneuvered to the north crossing the road on the western edge of map 5 in an attempt to flank the hill and small field to the south of the road on the west.

Movement and contact between both sides continued until the Soviets met their objectives. At this point we continued the scenario until the last turn to keep practicing the maneuvering in and out of cover.

Some one said somewhere..... So the Germans get to set up hidden in limiting---the city is forest .. Nothing visible so I come in straight into the forest/city ....skirting the southern end a BT7 platoon catches a glimpse of PzIIIh's unloading on him...from the woods to the south....getting to the edge of the forest nothing else is visible.... There is a wreck...The T34s get into the forest edge not in time to get one set of shots off at the PzIIIs before they retire out of LOS Remaining BTs swing north and east to avoid proximity to fields maybe containing tank guns... The Germans seem to be pushing east to lay fire on the BT...Trucks and infantry race from the woods to the field and set up in the south edge....they dig in as the action continues The T34s come out of the forest/city across the north of the forest ... the PzIIIH's are at the edge there is a fire fight and the game ends as the Germans try and set up a crossfire...but their south leg gets reduced and demoralized..... In the end neither said obtained their objectives....

The Germans set up in hidden positions in an effort to cause as many casualties to the Soviets as possible. The Soviet tanks roared into view looking for German targets.

Once encountered, the Soviet tank leaders showed their inexperience and seemed to freeze. Instead of rushing the German positions they came to a halt, seemingly content with trading volleys with the PzIIIs.

Neither side was able to damage the other; however, the Germans were concentrating fire on the BT-7s, essentially halving the Soviet forces, accomplishing their mission.

The Soviet armor entered from the West and immediately ran into the German AT guns. The guns failed miserably and were promptly overrun by the Soviets. The two PzIII's were positioned on the East side, and once the commotion started, headed West. A close up tank battle ensued, and the Germans were able to step reduce two Soviet armor units, and destroy another one. The Germans claim victory over a close battle. 6 Soviet steps lost to the German's 4. Thanks again Dan.

The Soviets set up entirely to enter from the east. The Germans setup largely on the small hill north of the road, and also in the woods to the west, and field to the south. The Soviet attack failed to gain any momentum, as they tried to flank the hill feature around to the north, from the east, and also from the southeast. The Germans opened fire with a tank and ATG on the hill and focused on the weaker BT7's. After the destruction of a BT7 platoon to the east, the Soviets crossed the minor river and moved onto the hill with two T34's, a second damaged BT7 having retreated off to the north after heavy losses. To the southeast the Soviets tried to engage Germans dug in, in the field. This attack failed badly when the Germans bravely assaulted the T34 and eventually retreated and destroyed it. The attackers had some success in the north with the sole success of the day, blowing up a PzIIIH. In the end, the Germans won, inflicting 9 VP losses to 5. Thanks again the excellent guidance from treadasaurusrex.

Oddly, the darn German side had amazing luck throwing initiative die rolls in this relatively short, and rather gamey scenario. This factor led directly to a fair measure of their success in long-range AT fire. The Russians horde mounted a 3-pronged armor-only attack that successfully exploited their superior mobility and also forced the Germans into splitting their relatively limited fire power. The Germans were not able to develop any armor piercing, crossfire opportunities by mostly holding their initial positions.

Unfortunately for the well-led Soviet attack, there were no accompanying infantry units to support the T-34A and BT-7 platoons as they moved west across Map 5 and into decisive engagement range. This is a decent instructional scenario and I agree with my worthy & determined opponent's rating of a 4.

A fun and very quick little game that demonstrated to me the Anti-tank rules and the power of various tanks. Additionally, the crossfire bonus was brutal with the right roles. In the end, it only took 3 turns to inflict 5 step losses to the Soviet BT-7's with my 37mm AT and 50mm AT guns and one of my PzIIIh's. Fun little game overall.

I played the Germans on the defensive placing everything in the woods on board 4 and as hidden units the Soviets had to get to range 1 to see them (I did open fire earlier though). The BT-7s ran into the 37mm AT gun and both Panzers, and got horribly torn up (all dead by end of game) The t-34s did manage to kill the 50mm AT gun on turn 4 but too little to late. Given a little more time the soviets could win this as the T-34s are fairly strong in this scenario. However, 5 turns with the Germans basically hiding is not enough time.

Ho utilizzato un set di regole speciali per mantenere lo spirito di uno scenario che prevedeva uita' nascoste. Sostanzialmente i tedeschi piazzavano le loro unita' sulla mappa mano a mano che i Russi le scoprivano. Come pensavo, la cosa si e' tramutata in una imboscata per i russi. Il cannone tedesco da 50mm posizionato nel bosco ha fatto sfracelli tra i BT7 russi. Dal canto loro con un paio di buoni tiri i Russi sono riusciti ad aliminare un panzer IIIh. L'azione decisiva per il tedesco e' stata pero' un assalto ravvicinato ad una unita' di T34 russi lasciata colpevolmente isolata su di un lato dello schieramento. Alla fine 8 steps persi per il Russo contro i 4 persi dai tedeschi.

Lo scenaro sembra carino ma non da certamente il suo meglio in solitario.

The Germans divided their forces - guns in the west forest, AFVs on the east hilltop. This proved a costly mistake.

Soviets entered en masse from the east along the road, then upon contact fanned out to attack the hilltop from two sides.

The German guns weren't able to enter the battle before the Panzer IIIs were torn apart in the crossfire.

Mentoring 3 - Tank Incursion

Germans begin this one hidden if deployed in limiting terrain with the Soviets entering either on East or West sides. To have a little fun with this as I was playing solo, I came up with a simple process to place the hidden units as the Russians moved onto the board. I won't detail it here but basically, I came up with a chart and marked the map with "likely deployment" hexes and then grouped the German units into 6 groups (separating the 2 PzIIIH units). As the Russians moved on, I would roll a check on the closest "likely deployment" hex and if the roll was made, I would roll for the group to deploy. It was an experimental process but seemed to work ok for what I tried to do.

Using this, The Germans ended up with the 50mm gun with leaders and a truck in the fields (0807 board 5) to the East with 2 INF and a LT in 1007. the 37mm gun deployed in the fields to the south in 0804 with a truck and leader along with the Captain, INF and HMG in 1106. The PzIIIh units deployed in 0710 and 1012 (in woods) on board 4. The Russians approached with the BT-7s from the east and the T-34s from the West.

BTs moved first and after triggering the 50mm deployment, suffered an OP fire shot that reduced it and forced demoralzation. the other BT7s moved for the hills at 0811. The T-34s entered from the West through the northwest fields and were able to get to the eastern edge of the fields. the 2 PzIIIh units moved up towards the hills near the BT-7s where they hoped to inflict maximum damage. The remaining infantry and HMGs followed those tanks to provide support should the other armor close.

As the units moved into position, AT shots began to fly, with the 50mm and German Armor Efficiency providing the necessary firepower to reduce and demoralize all the BT-7s (including eliminating 1 whole unit). The T-34s came roaring out of the fields and were able to get adjacent to one of the PzIIIh units and ultimately destroyed that unit while the other PzIIIh moved off towards the fleeing BT-7s to stay out of range of the deadly T-34s. Final score was Germans 9, Soviets 4.

I did play this kind of aggressively for both sides as I wanted to get some shots in. The T-34s are the best units on the field here as they can achieve positive die-roll modifiers. At normal range +1, adjacent +2 and if cross-firing, +4! My hidden unit placement process didn't work out too bad either but it was built specifically for this scenario. Still, not a bad little battle for a solo tank fest.

The Soviets enter either west or east maps sides. Lead with t-34s as they have 4 armor. Peter L had his troops on the center and west edge woods. The Pz Mk. IIIj were right in the the center on the road.

Given the the woods in the south center form a movement obstacle do not go south. The two tank units I sent that way were useless.

Remember 55 turns. Need to find the German units to eliminate. By going center and the northern half of the map the units are in better position to over support each other. Making cross fire opportunities is better.

This is one boring scenario of chicken or hide and seek. Germans start hidden. They are revealed when an enemy unit moves adjacent. If the Germans do not come out to play it is going to be hard for either side to win.

I did not take a couple of shots at the none T-34as. I want to say BT-7s. If I did the Germans would have fulfilled their victory conditions. Would that have left me open to T - 34 counter attack? If so a draw.

The Soviet player must move carefully with a couple of units flush out the German infantry and guns.

Once again it came down to iniatative die rolls. I put my tanks in position for several cross fire shots. Steve got to fire first with 2 activations. Not a big differential. I rolled low and he high. Was not able to take his 2 tank counters.

Have to keep the counters in separate hexes so as to split up German fire. The German tanks are efficient so that is 2 shots per non moving turn. Last turn he started rolling high on the dice.

For the Sovs this seek and destroy. If the Germans are hiding in the middle of the woods then the tanks are easier targets.

This session was mostly an exercise in frustration for the Soviet tank battalion commander who had to cross a good deal of clear terrain in the face of a German 2-company-plus, combined arms task force astride a central road in the woods. No artillery or air support support made this a near impossible-to-win situation for the all-armor, early-war Soviet force. Ten Soviet tank steps (T-34a steps counted as double) were lost and the Germans lost 2 steps in their blundering, but ultmately successful defense of the central woods position.

The Germans set up in the woods on the west of the and the fields on the east map. These units were set up hidden. The Germans are trying to keep their force as strong as possible. The Soviets are on the hunt looking for German troops to weaken them. The Soviet forces are approaching from the West.

Entering from the west the Soviets decide to spread out and move through the area slowly looking for the Germans? The BT7s to the north moved around the fires and did encounter any Germans. A BT7 followed the road in the center of the battlefield and was treated by a Panzer IIIh that successfully hit the BT7 and cause a step loss and was demoralized. The BT7 stopped there. His fellow BT7 came in and was shot at by a 37 mm AT gun and the shot missed. The undeterred BT7 kept moving and the 37 mm shot again this time hit and demoralized the BT7. The soviets had found the Germans and focus their force on the woods where the shots came from.

End of turn 1 Step losses Soviets 2 Germans 0

One of the T34s moved into the woods and came across a platoon of infantry that surprised them so bad that the t34's were demoralized. Plenty of shots was made but not much damage was done.

End of turn 2 Step losses Soviets 2 Germans 0

The 37mm AT gun shot at an already reduced BT7 and was able to eliminate it. The BT7s that were moving across the north ran into a separate set of germans. A PzIIIh was able to op fire and hit it for a step loss. The second BT7 slowly maneuvered towards where the shot came from another shot was fired at this BT7 but it was too far away and missed the BT7 moved in closer. What the BT7 didn't know what that there was a 50mm AT Gun just waiting for it to move into range. Once the BT7 stopped moving the 50mm fired and was able to hit it.

The Soviets had suffered too many Casualties and left the battlefield without doing any damage to the Germans.

p.s. I know it says the victor was the Soviets but it was the Germans. Will fix it as soon as I can.

The game ended a draw. We used the hidden units bit and I wasn't too familiar with it. The enemy kept his infantry back and I spent too much time trying to shoot up his tanks. An interesting little skirmish.
