Introduction

Until newly-arrived paratroopers of the 11th Airborne Division could take over the 7th Infantry Division’s positions on the eastern slopes of the Leyte mountain chain, only one American regiment advanced up the west coast toward Ormoc. That gave the Japanese an opportunity for a counter-attack, though they don’t seem to have realized the extent of American weakness during this brief period.

Conclusion

Attacking on the evening of Thanksgiving Day, the Japanese hoped to catch the Americans distracted by their special dinner - which would not arrive for several more days. The American company holding the front had orders to withdraw if faced with a superior force, but they became confused under fire and the carefully planned retreat became a rout.

Leyte 1944, Scenario Twenty-Nine: Thanksgiving Day

This a 12 turn night battle but with a three hex visibility and the Japanese have twice the force as the Americans with a nice 3 x 16 off-board artillery support. The Japanese have only two objectives, to eliminate 4 or more American steps and clear the east-west road, either one will give them a victory, both a major victory.

It didn’t start out well for the Japanese that poked their head over the first ridge but after that, led by a massive artillery barrage the Japanese swarmed the remaining American positions, clearing the east-west road and eliminating 6 American steps for their two steps and a leader lost, for a Major Japanese victory. The Americans lost 3 steps alone to artillery fire, 1 step to direct fire and 2 steps to assault combat. The first three turns didn’t go that well but the next nine did.
