Lithuania's Iron Wolves Base Game
Introduction

Boasting aside, the German Wehrmacht was not ready for war in the spring of 1939; both Czechoslovakia and Lithuania folded in the face of a bluff. Lithuania did not have the force to defend its entire frontier with East Prussia, but neither did the Germans have the ability to mount a full-scale invasion of even such a small country. The panzers could not be everywhere, and at the eastern end of Memel Land the Germans attacked with a second-line infantry division.

Conclusion

The slow-moving German attack, better suited to 1914 than to 1939, got over the river and slowly pushed the Lithuanians back but could not force a breakthrough. The Germans could win this war through sheer force of numbers deployed into set-piece attacks, but that was not what their Supreme Leader had decreed. Infantry attacks were not part of modern warfare.

Scenario LIWo006

Another river crossing for the Germans, except this time the river is minor but with different, yet equally challenging victory conditions. The Germans were able to cross the river to turn the Lithuanian left flank, gain the bridge on map 3 while clearing the town after heavy fighting that went back in forth for most of the game.

The key for the German victory was the leaders that they drew and flipped, 10 out of 16 had a combat modifier and 14 of 16 had a morale modifier, this morale modifier, by most of their leaders, offset the 7/6 German morale, which helped keep the Germans in the game as they assaulted the Lithuanian positions.

The Iron Wolves again put up a good fight but were just overwhelmed late in the scenario by the concentrated Germans forces who were able to achieve all of their victory conditions for a major victory.
