While the situation in the Naktong Bulge remained unclear at higher headquarters, the Marines holding the front lines were absolutely sure of one thing: the North Koreans would counter attack in the night. They set trip flares in front of their positions before bedding down for the night, leaving one man in four on watch. Sure enough, a North Korean set off a green flare at 0230, and the fight was on once again. |

The North Koreans attacked with a great deal of spirit, but the Marines met them with equal determination. Both sides suffered an enormous number of casualties and when daylight approached the North Koreans pulled back to their own hilltop positions to face a Marine attack that cleared the rest of Obong-ni Ridge. That night Lee Kwon Mu requested and received permission to withdraw his division back across the Naktong River. The first battle of the Naktong Bulge was over. |

The 8-3 Marine Infantry counter appears in most of the Saipan 1944 and Marianas 1944 scenarios, replacing the 10-3 DF valued Marine counters for those scenarios and is currently published in the most recent Saipan printing. (JayTownsend

Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #16: The Last Straw A night scenario where the North Koreans attack dug-in American Marines, which sounds difficult but where are two ways the NKPA can win, one by eliminating 7 or more American steps without losing 150% more steps then the Marines OR by controlling one of the two east-west roads on either map. The Marines have no idea where the NKPA units will enter so they have to split their forces on both east-west roads, so having to cover both maps and they setup the mortar units in the middle to support both roads. The North Koreans decide to attack only one road in force but split off a few units to go after the all alone Marine 81mm mortars, hoping to score some easy points but the Americans pull out most of their dug-in units on the northern east-west road that are not engaged, to block the NKPA units attempting to attack their 81mm mortars and reinforcing their comrades in the south which are blunting the North Koreans major attack there. This scenario had a lot of maneuver but the North Koreans were awful on the dice rolls for this night action and after losing seven steps in their rush to get enough points in 15 turns called off the offensive, as their units were too scattered in various morale states to achieve any victory condition and had only eliminated 3 Marines steps. So a clear American victory in the dead of the night! |
