Introduction

The 4th "Ivy" Division had bogged down trying to break through the fortified line protecting Cherbourg. Hoping to regain momentum, division commander Raymond Barton ordered his 22nd Infantry Regiment to skirt the fortified line and reach Pinabel. This would isolate a large number of German diehards gathering at Maupertus Airport east of Cherbourg. In addition the airport was the last way out of the vise that was closing in on Cherbourg. It was late in the afternoon before the 22nd was ready to jump off. Time was of the essence.

Conclusion

Pinabel was taken but staying there for the night was out of the question due to heavy fire directed from the airport. Fourth Division's staff considered withdrawing but Lieutenant Colonel Hervey Tribolet of the 22nd Regiment's 1St Battalion was reluctant to give up his gains and decided to press forward. His troops failed to reach the airport but took Hill 158 in bitter fighting. At VII Corps headquarters General "Lighting" Joe Collins was ecstatic as Hill 158 dominated the surrounding ground.

Scenario IN44017

This is an AAR from a game played quite a few years ago. Overall, this was a very good and balanced scenario. We played this one almost to completion and determined that it is a scenario that is quite difficult to achieve a major victory on either side. That is, without having a series of horrible die rolls going against you! We had to call the game before the last few turns were over due to time constraints. However, we agreed that the game could have gone either way, which is why I chose to call this one a "DRAW". Was a very fun afternoon of gaming with this particular scenario!

AAR NOTE I am just now pulling these games off the shelf and recording our shared play results with my gaming buddy here in town where I live. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact date of play on some of these games. However, I do know if we played them "pre-pandemic" vs. coming "right out of the pandemic lockdowns". If you see a play date of 2019-06-01, this is for a pre-pandemic game and AAR. 2022-06-01 is for our post-pandemic gaming reboots at our local game and magic card store.
