Introduction |
---|
General Bart called in the Air Force to soften up the 36th Nemanskiy Red Banner Rifle Corps. They pounded the communists with 118 sorties by B-36 heavy bombers for two days, dropping over 7 million pounds of bombs including firebombs. Then the Poles and Americans hit them with everything they had on the ground. To their credit the Soviets put up a fight. |
Conclusion |
---|
The destruction of a corps would hit the Soviet command’s confidence very hard. They would likely send in a fresh corps from a nearby army that had not been chosen for the initial attack. However, the loss would give the generals pause, and make them ask the question, “Is this still a good idea? Have we bitten off more than we can chew (as the Nazis did just a decade ago)?” Alone, it would not end the war they started, but with other events, it might cumulatively affect their decision. Stalin was a pragmatist of high order. |
