Introduction

After a two-week struggle for the Serfimovich bridgehead, the proud Bersaglieri enjoyed a five-day rest during which the could even sleep and eat a proper meal. During those days, 260 new recruits joined them, partially replenishing the horrific losses of the July and early August battles. But a new ordeal began when they learned that they had been ordered to stem the Soviet advance against Sforzesca Division. Celere Division was divided into two attacking columns, with the jumping-off area located southwest of Jagodny. The main force, led by Colonel Felici, would move northeast and recapture Hills 224 (on Board 8) and 232 (on Board 4). the other force, led by Colonel Salvatores, would move north and capture Hill 208.4 west of Jagodny, as a part of a maneuver that involved several other units (see following scenario). Although the Longo column was composed of four battalions, it had more than 900 men.

Conclusion

The Bersaglieri column initially advanced into Soviet territory without too much difficulty, but came under mortar fire as it approached the objective hills. Despite mounting losses, the column pressed forward. Hill 224 was heavily defended, so the Italians decided to go around it and take Hill 232. the attack initially went well, but Soviet reinforcements arrived and pushed back the two lead Italian battalions. Only the Italian second wave was able to restore the situation, and Hill 232 fell into Italian hands just as darkness was falling. Soviet counterattacks continued for a while, and then Guards assault units arrived and tried to cut the Bersaglieri's retreat route. In the early hours of the 24th, the situation had stabilized but it became clear that the column was completely isolated. The order came to withdraw, and the Bersaglieri silently moved back to hill 218.9 (on board 5).
