Introduction |
---|
Seventeenth Army ordered a counterattack, and the Bersaglieri moved promptly to obey. The second day of fighting for the Serafimovich bridgehead started with Axis forces - the German 578th Regiment and the Italian 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment - taking the initiative and moving to take the two hills that dominated the town of Serafimovich. |
Conclusion |
---|
The advance met increasing resistance by Soviet infantry, followed by a number of counterattacks. In particular, the reserve battalion of the 3rd Regiment (XXV) had to be diverted southeast to face a sudden threat coming from the nearby village of Beliayesky. Also, at approximately 1300 numerous Soviet tanks arrived, carrying infantry. Some of the tanks infiltrated the Axis lines and overran some artillery pieces, but the Soviet counterattacks were eventually repulsed, with approximately 20 tanks put out of action and their accompanying infantry eliminated. At the end of the day, Axis forces were in position for a morning attack on Serafimovich. |
