Introduction

As part of the III Corps' surprise attack, the 5th Infantry Division's 9th Dorobanti (Rifle) Regiment went forward with fixed bayonets and no artillery preparation, hoping to catch the Soviets by surprise. They succeeded.

Conclusion

Neither side proved willing to back down, and a furious hand-to-hand fight raged around the hilltop. By morning neither side could claim the hill, and close-quarter fighting erupted again when darkness fell and carried on into the next day.

Scenario EFDx061

As others have noted it is probably not within the cards for the Romanians to actually take the hill from the Soviets in this scenario. They have lower morale than the Russians and barely equal numbers of troops. Their one potential saving grace is that they have two ENG platoons which make attacking the entrenchments somewhat more possible.

In reality, the Romanian should fight for a draw, which is the historical result. By contesting one hilltop hex you can deny the Soviet win. It is critical to ensure that any supporting Soviet troops are pinned down by complementary assaults in order to ensure that your reserves are readily available to reinforce your hilltop assault. If you get morale bonuses use them to recover the units that have to leave the assault hexes because the Soviets will counterattack and with their higher morale and large number of leaders they will be on high columns.

I suggest that the Romanians get to the hill quickly in order to reduce the number of turns that the Soviets have to fire Op Fire at you while you advance.

This is a neat little puzzle for the Romanian player. There isn't much for the Soviet to do, although shuffling troops to feed the assaults is necessary, they don't have to run much as they are almost always in entrenchments. It probably isn't a great face to face scenario. However, as a solo tactical exercise it is quite challenging. I give it a "4" for that purpose.

First shot at an Eastern Front scenario. This 16-turn game pits nearly equal numbers of Romanians against Russians. The drawback is those Russians are entrenched, and it's dark. For 10 turns, visibility is 1 hex. In the jungles of the Pacific or the forests of Western Europe, everyone has some terrain, but not so much on the open steppes. Romanians took the worst of it by far. At the end of 13 turns, with visibility and range rapidly growing and adding that much more to the impact of the entrenched Russians, and with no Romanians having yet penetrated the Russian line, I called it a game. Romanian losses 19 steps and 2 leaders, Soviets lost 1 step and 1 leader (a LT that ran away - that south edge is way too close when a Russian has difficulty rallying). The Romanians left one reduced stack in assault with the Soviet left flank position while the rest of the troops and leaders headed north in a demoralized state. Lots of room to learn in this theatre.

All infantry fight

An interesting game. All infantry fight between the Russians and Romania all for a solitary hill, with the interesting bit that the battle starts in the dark of night.

I set the Russians with a fairly solid line just south of the road in an attempt to hold the attack up. The darkness meant that the Romanians were able to rush the dug in Russians but excellent fire from the defenders stymied the rush slightly. at one point all the forward trenches were in combat. Despite the numbers the Romanians had the early losses until it finally turned to the attackers side, but the defenders had done their jobs and this would be soon to be important later.

By now the darkness was fading and but with a close range fight didn't mean it was too important.

Time was also a factor as with only 60 minutes left to attack the hill against a very strong defence. Morale was important as the Russians also the advantage here. The by now usual quick rush wasn't as successful this time and in the end the Russians just managed to hold all the hills.

A great game and one I would certainly play again.

Scenario EFDx061

Scenario EFDx061

A short night to day scenario that has the Romanian infantry units trying to dislodge Soviet units from the a hill. The Soviets have all the advantage with this scenario, setup, morale and OBA. The Romanians need to hope for good leaders, which, in out play did not happen. Needs less to say, the Romanians we slaughtered. There was some hope as the night gave them cover to advance, but once the visibility increased the Soviets could hit all their units. The Romanians were brave and did make it to some of the entrenchments but they just could not take the hill. Fourteen step losses later has them retreating from the battle.

This scenario is quite unbalanced. About a thrd of the Soviet Units didn't fire a shot and it was still a pretty one sided game.

Early in the battle, the Romanian attack was looking pretty good, breaking into the trench line with few problems. However, things quickly broke down. An extremely lucky assault by the Romanians on the penultimate turn ended up giving them a toehold on the hill at the end of the game. There was a single demoralized understrength platoon in an assault versus a whole pile of soviets at the end of the game, enough for a draw, through really the Soviets won handily. On the last turn after the assault failed to wipe out the Romanian platoon, the Soviets called in an artillery strike on the top of the hill, though it failed to cause any damage.

Not totally unplayable, I did finish it after all, but probably not winnable by the Axis.

Hi Rex,

Take it from somebody who's done the same ..... be careful ever writing "Not winnable by (whichever side)".

I see this scenario does have 1 x Axis win, 1 x Soviet win plus your draw.

Funnily enough, the stats make it looked balanced at present for some reason.

I only say this because I once wrote "It could never be won by" and the next play of said scenario produced exactly the opposite of my prediction .. LOL

All the best Rex,

Vince

Entrenched Soviets on a hill. No OBA to soften things up. Only sixteen turns. Well, at least it's dark!

No time to be subtle. The Romanians make quick sprint in the dark and smash into the nearest two Soviets. The plans is to keep it focused only assaulting two adjacent hexes. Drag casualties out and shove the fresh troops forward. The first dug-in Soviets break. Now up the hill to an entrenched stack. Manage to get through the initial round. Romanian casualties are streaming into the darkness and things are stacked up in front. Nothing budges.

As the sun rises it is clear the Romanians won't take the hill but maybe they can stay in the one hill hex and force a draw. Soviets start adding fresh troops and grind away the remaining Romanians. It is just a matter of time.

Since this was just a shoving match I would have rated this scenario a one but since it wasn't until the last turn that the Soviets finally cleared the hill making it a nail-biter for the Soviet's I increase my rating to 2.
