Introduction |
---|
Despite clear signs of an impending German invasion, the Belgian government would not allow French and British forces to enter their country until the Germans had actually crossed the border. Once word came of the German attack, the forward elements of France's mobile divisions raced across Belgium to take up their defensive positions. The 10e Regiment de Cuirassiers, the 4e Division Legere Mecanique's reconnaissance regiment, crashed into a German reconnaissance battalion probing ahead of the panzers. |
Conclusion |
---|
The determination of the French troops did not surprise the Germans, but the quality of their equipment most certainly did. The French did not yet have the battlefield experience of the Germans, which showed in their comparative lack of command and control, but that would come — if the war lasted long enough. After a couple of hours of fire and movement both sides withdrew, leaving several dozen smoking wrecks to mark their passing. |
