Introduction

With the war due to end at noon, Gen. Kirill Meretskov of the Soviet 7th Army ordered a final attack on the Finnish positions at Taipale, which had defied the Soviets since December. The war was to end with a clear Soviet tactical victory, and he instructed his artillerymen to make sure they brought no shells back home with them. Unwilling to die in the war's last hours, the Red Army infantrymen had to be roused from their trenches under dire threats from their political officers. But they dutifully went forward, and men of both sides prepared to die for no reason.

Conclusion

The fighting continued until the very stroke of noon, when a sudden silence came over the battlefield until a Soviet brass band began to play the Internationale. Meretskov could claim his victory, though the gains had been small and utterly meaningless. The next morning the Finns marched out of their trenches and began the trek back across the new Soviet-Finnish border.

If you LIKE off board artillery pounding on entrenchments this one really is for you. While the play is fascinating it is hardly "fun". The Soviets begin facing the Finns in Karelia. The Finns are locked into entrenchments, much of it in limiting terrain. The Soviets have 2-3 times the forces and have so much artillery that you may not get it all shot in a turn if you have any bad luck with the fog of war rolls. In terms of game play, the Soviets advance to spot the Finns, the artillery smashes them repeatedly within the same turn and again the next turn until losses or morale failure makes them able to be assaulted. Once the entrenchment in question is taken, the Soviets move on to the next one and repeat. The key for the Soviets is the morale bonus provided by the NKVD troops. Without it the Finns can chase away the rabble. Very instructive but not very fun. Still, if you want to see what WW I would have been like with improved weaponry, unlimited ammunition and better field communication, this is the one for you.
