Answer to 2nd question first, no. Apart from the ability to activate 2 stacks 2 hexes apart, there is no advantage, and it increases the risk(slightly) of having your command disrupted.

To the first question, not much. The advantages are being able to assault and being in a better position for assault combat, and slightly decreased vulnerability to being alone.
