A house rule I use playing solitaire....in addition to leader casualties, if ALL the other steps in a hex are killed by a X result, the leader is also X. An X doesn't mean these men are all dead, just hors de combat. I like to think in these cases that the leader is looking out for the evacuation of his men. Kommissars are my exception. They remain in the hex alone.

It's just displacement. He never exits the hex in the traditional sense. He rolls for capture and if he passes he teleports to an adjacent hex.
