Red vs. Black Messages

When I log in, I see that new messages have the red border, older messages are black. What puzzles me is that on some occasions, all the messages in the folder are red (even messages I read several months ago). Any idea as to why that's happening?

The intended result is that messages you have not yet read are red. However, I too have noticed that lately sometimes an entire thread - including months old messages - will be red. I'm not sure why this is happening but have added it to the maintenance queue.
