British OB
In Both Beyond Normandy and Panzer Lehr, the British OB will say X 8 6 pdr Or X 8 Firefly (and a few others where this is relevant
But in the Beyond Normandy British OB on Vassal, you always have an option to take a solid shot version, or a superior HVAP option.
Both modules have very similar Soecial Rules sections, but this difference is not discussed in either.

Instinctivyl i felt that in late 1944, HVAP would be available - but then it occurred to me that why have the solid shot in the Vassal counter mix at all?

Similarly - the scenarios will say 1 8 Achilles, but the counter mix has Achilles 3 inch and Achilles 17 pdr options

So, how to decide?

RE: British OB
First, read the extension notes. Questions like this is why I write them.

The Firefly first appeared in Beyond Normandy with an AT value of 6-7, but the 17-pdr had a value of 8-8. Technically correct for the Firefly, incorrect for the 17-pdr, as APDS ammunition for it was not available until September of 1944. I wrote an article for the Daily Content on this subject about 4 years ago.

Still, the game standard for the 17-pdr and all that carry it has become an AT of 8-8, even in Cassino. Thus the HVAP version is the what to use unless...
  1. You have a serious history bend, like I do.
  2. You think the play balance is squishy in earlier scenarios, which I do.
  3. You think the German side, or your opponent, needs a little help in this fight.
The 6-pdr has similar considerations, but as it got the new ammunition before D-Day, it doesn't matter as much. You can use Liberation '44 pieces for Panzer Lehr in place of those from Beyond Normandy.

I noticed that Mir Nizam Osman Khan is getting HVAP ammo for his 17-pdrs, but isn't for his 6-pdrs. (I wonder who is geeky enough to understand what I just said...)
