possible errata in Big Red One scenario #51
Not sure if Mike Perryman reads these forums, but I'd love to get his input.

I'm setting up scenario #51 from Big Red One (Djeba el Beida). The victory conditions refer to control of 60-meter hill hexes but there are no 60-meter hills on map 77.

Wondering if the victory conditions are wrong or if we should be using a different map (although a different map would make the reference to hex 0707 incorrect).

Also, on a related matter: the setup instructions for Big Red One #41 Morning on Hill 336, specify that the Germans enter the battle map from the WEST, which is incorrect, as the historic Wehrmacht approach was from the EAST. The victory conditions indicate that the Germans receive points for exiting at least 10 steps off the WEST edge.

Mike's graciously around on a regular basis. Member profile link.

Probably easier to send him a PM or email through the forum.

I don't have the Big Red One yet. My notes show the Germans enter on the east map edge and Hill 336 is the 60' high hill on board 76. Which was the middle map when I submitted the scenarios.
                                                        Hope that helps, Mike

So, the map change seems to be the problem. The map should 76, not 77.

Thanks Mike.

I think we're mixing up issues in #41 and #51.

#41 does have map 76 already. I think the issue is just that the Germans should enter from the East not the West.

For #51 changing to map 76 would add a 60-meter hill but the setup instructions and note about hex 0707 wouldn't make sense. I suspect it's likely that references to 60-meter and 40-meter hills should just be changed to 40-meter and 20-meter hills.

I don think I am. My book, page 16, has map 77 for for scenario 51. The 3rd victory condition bullet says: Control all 60-meter hill hexes of Djebel el Beida at then of play. Map 77 has no 60-meter hill hexes.

Again, my book on page 4, has the Germans entering the map from the west side. The 3rd objective for the Germans os to exit 10 steps off the west side. An easy task if that's where you enter. If the Germans can eliminate 1 American step and bogey back, they win.

Not having the book caused me some confusion with scenario numbers. After finding my original notes. The Germans setup east of the trail and the Americans setup in any hill hex west of the trail. The 40' high hill hex that includes hex 0707 is Djebel el Beida.

Yep, this is sure a confusing write up, but it seems to hinge on a mistake in the published victory conditions in the new publication.

To recap; in the new Big Red One game book, #51 Djebel el Beida, the German side is instructed to set up as defending on Map 77 around Hex 0707. This is NOT a 60-meter hill mass, but IT IS a 40-meter hilltop, so the Map 77 designation appears to be correct. There is no victory condition about exiting units in this scenario. The problem seems to be that the 2nd & 3rd victory conditions should read: VC-2) the Americans control more 20-meter hill hexes on Djebel el Beida than the Germans, AND VC-3) the Americans must control all the 40-meter hill hexes on Djebel el Beida.

Alternately, if the intended Map was, indeed, number 76, and not 77, then Hex 0707 is on the wrong (west) side of the north-south road, and is in a ground-level valley!

In sum, I think that that Map 77 designation is correct, but that the, as published, victory conditions need to specify 40 and not 60-meter high elevations on Bjebel Beida.

Hope that this is helpful.
