The rules (Ed 4) specifically say that indirect fire can be spotted by an active leader, but direct fire has to be self "spotted". Yes?

That's correct. The firing unit must be able to see the target.

Having read what cjsiam said.... I believe the answer must be in allowing the 150mm IG a potting range of 15 from towns also. The idea that the gun(s) tend to fire directly is correct and that a unit spotter can climb up on that roof is also correct.
At least it makes sense to me and does not corrupt the rules.

..... and it all depends on how the weapon was historically used and the sighting capabilities. I believe the pieces/units in question should be noted with a "sic".
