maps are really gorgeous IMO the best ones ever made
... so there you go.
I hope I can be forgiven I made a comment just on maps not on the scenarios!

Thanks Otto! It's always super to see a designer like the maps--it's part of what keep me making them! And you posted that on my birthday...if only I'd thought to look then
So, with 8 maps, why do 39 of the 40 scenarios make modifications to them? Some are minor "treat the river as a wadi", and while the scenarios look interesting, that's a put-off for me.
The game was initially designed as a scenario book relying on many many maps.
John made a great effort to squize down the number of maps to eight. He could not really go down to four.
Minor modification were introduced in order to preserve the original scenario design.... and therefore to be faithfull to the hystorical battleground.
There is always a trade off here. Personally I'would be put off by 40 scenarios being played on the same 4 geomorphic maps without a single modification.
I would suspect that, at least in a few battles, a few key terrain features might be missing.
We've got 8 beautiful maps, 40 scenarios for them with slight terrain modifications, and a unlimited number of further uses for the maps. Compare this with Little Saturn, which originally had 39 scenarios and used about a dozen maps.
