Somewhat late, I will articulate my reasons for liking these back-punched counters. Mostly smoothness. The side most likely to be up is flat. If this particular rendition had be concave, like previous cuttings, I don't think I would have liked them much.

There is a little shadow under the counter. It adds a smidgen of visual depth to individual counters on the map. Not much, but it is a nice affect.
... More and more, people around the world are coming to realize that the world is flat! Winking
