RE: OBA smoke
Only one hex !
My regular opponent usually spends two OBA modules together to be sure to place at least one in the hex (the one hex).

I would love to see a reference that attests to that from 4th Ed....

What I have seen-- 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 don't say that....
But I would prefer it was clear---
Even the Smoke rules say "For each unit or artillery segment firing"---meaning more than one can be firing...otherwise
it would be "For the ".

Tis my quandry.

RE: OBA smoke
Dr. B. confirms that 3.14 allows you to activate as many  up to all artillery increments in a single activation and target as many hexes.

I asked:

"If you have six increments of artillery, can I activate all of the in an action segment and fire, by combining three increments firing at one hex, and the other three combined to fire at another hex?

Or, 2. can I only combine up to three in an action segment and fire at only a single hex in that action segment and have to wait for another action segment to fire the other three combined at a single hex?"

He responded:

"In your example, you may activate as many increments as the scenario provides. Those six (which is a very great many) could be fired at anywhere from two to six different hexes, depending on the combinations (3 and 3; 3, 2 and 1; 2, 2, and 2; 1,1,1,1,1 and 1 etc.) It is intended to allow a preparatory bombardment with the advance right on its heels. Else the infantry would have to lie low for 15 minutes after the last shell lands.

3.14 Off-Map Artillery and Air Support. Firing one or more off-map artillery increments (9.2) or attacking with aircraft units (15.1) constitutes a complete action segment. No units on the map may activate in the same action segment when off-map artillery fires or air units attack

The rules allow what the rules allow. They allow you to fire all of your artillery in one action segment. Were that limited, the rules would say so (some scenario special rules DO place limits, for example when a player has both conventional artillery and naval guns)."

So that settles that.

So, it seems my earlier guess was wrong. Discussion and analysis seemed to be going that way.

RE: OBA smoke
Breaking news: we may use as many offboard artillery increments as we want in a single activation !!!
Clearly, I’m not the only one to have misinterpreted that rule but why is it so ?
4th Ed rules seem indeed to allow such extended use of the artillery modules and the wording in 2nd and 3rd Ed rules is just about the same…
So what ?
Well, I’ve found it : in PG modern rules, page 8, the possible actions during a single activation are all listed. The 2nd sentence clearly specifies the use of 3 artillery modules max, on the same hex.
Should I change it in PG modern rules?

RE: OBA smoke
Considering that I could have up to 3(stacked deep) x7(hexes around one officer---don't get me started with chaining officers...
--21 artillery activated at the same time by one officer while on-board...(only added together with leader mods, and no more
than 3 can combine into any single attack....)

It's not clear to me why a modern OBA would be limited??

Certainly is a new perspective---but it's been there all along in the WWII 4th Ed. at least...

RE: OBA smoke
It is probably that way in PG: modern because whoever wrote those rules misunderstood the PG rules and carried it forward and wrote it more explicitly.
