Chaining combined fire
Hi, a quick question. Can you chain combined fire into one big blast? Say I have an activation chain going on and all the adjacent leaders have a combat mod, can I combine the firepower of all hexes into one big blast?

RE: Chaining combined fire
Interesting question. My initial response is no. It might be permissible through subordinate activation. Something like a MAJ (with a combat modifier) combines with the hex of a CAPT (with a combat modifier), who combines with the hex of a LT (with a combat modifier), who combines with another hex. Assuming that the activation chain ran down the path. A question for the CONSIM support page.

....always looking for that sure kill, eh? I would say no also... although there is no specific "rule" that says no, I would preclude that level of firepower, if for no other reason than for the esthetics of the matter. (But that's just me.)

RE: Chaining combined fire
As long as everyone in the chain has combat modifiers.....

This is the relevant passage in the Leader section (6...):

Units in different hexes may not combine their fire values into one attack without the aid of a leader. An activated, good-order leader with a combat modifier of "1" may combine the Direct or Bombardment fire values of units in his hex plus one adjacent hex. An activated, good order leader with a combat modifier of "2" may combine the Direct or Bombardment fire values of units in his hex plus two adjacent hexes. He MAY NOT combine Direct and Bombardment fire into one attack. Leaders can combine fire and add their modifiers during Opportunity Fire as well (13.0).

And in the firing section:
7.33 Combining Fire
Units (including strongpoints) may add their direct or bombardment fire values together to make one stronger attack. ...
Units in adjacent hexes may combine fire only if activated by a leader who has a combat modifier. A leader can combine the fire of his hex plus a number of adjacent hexes equal to his combat modifier (6.41).

As defined in the Activation rules:
3.2 Subordinate Activation
An activating leader may, if desired, activate other, lower-ranking leaders (but NOT leaders of the same or higher ranks) in his hex and the six hexes adjacent to him. Those leaders may in turn activate units in their hexes and adjacent hexes, plus leaders in those hexes who are of lower rank. This all happens in the same action segment, and all leaders and units so activated may move and fire normally.(emphasis mine...)

The rule only discusses adding 1 hex or adding 2 hexes...based on the combat modifier of a single leader....
But that then is "normal" action for such a leader...
Which 3.2 then says they can participate in being activated by a senior leader....

So--- I think the rules allow this.

THOUGHTS?
(last stand in a woodline, or edge of town, or line of dug in....but, keeping that going for any period
is going to be a bitch....cause you're not firing at the rest...and they will be getting closer...)

RE: Chaining combined fire
Recently, Dr. B responded, and I posted this elsewhere, that 'the rules allow what the rules allow."  In this case, the rules do not allow combined fire by Subordinate Activation.  7.33 say "an" activated leader... this is singular and nowhere mentions s "through subordinate activation may you combine fire."

3.2 merely allows subordinate activation, it mentions nothing about fire.  yes you can activate many leaders down the chain to fire but their combing of fire can only be done by a single leader with appropriate combat modifier; so each leader in this subordinate activation will combine fire by itself and with the units chosen to do so, each leader as a separate fire.

.... and that is exactly what I thought, but could not find it in the rules. Thank you, Blackcloud.

Dr. B responded to this on Consimworld:
 >Can you chain combined fire in PG and IA?

No.
