In an all-armor assault, the 4th edition rules, section 12.4, indicate that "the Direct Fire values of all his units in the hex" are used to resolve an assault. However, the option to use AT fire against other vehicles in the hex is given in Section 12.5.2, but with no die roll modifiers. So, two questions:
- Is direct fire actually used to calculate results in a tank-on-tank battle? That doesn't seem to make much sense assuming all vehicles are buttoned up.
- Why would anyone conduct a tank-on-tank assault unless direct fire were used to calculate results, since one would give up the +1 DRM by moving into the same hex with the enemy vehicles?
