Fall of Empires/Inf Attacks Rules Questions. - Champagne - 08-26-2024

Fall of Empires, Winter's Battle and Infantry Attacks 2nd ed.

I am an absolute newbie trying to learn this PzG game system. I rarely play tactical board wargames, and I chose the Infantry Attacks series of games because I am intensely interested in the World War One battles of 1914 and early 1915.

I have a few rules questions. My first question is regarding the Close Assault section of the Rules. My understanding is that an Infantry Company must BEGIN the Activation phase Adjacent to the hex to be Assaulted. It is illegal to move into the Assault hex from a hex that is not Adjacent. In other words, in Clear Terrain, a Jager infantry company with a movement of 3 must move Adjacent to the Assault hex in one turn. Then in the following turn it must be Activated and then enter the Assault hex. The Jager infantry company cannot legally move into the Assault hex and execute an Assault from 2 or 3 hexes away from the Assault hex.

Do I understand the Rules correctly?

Thank you.

Yes, you do. The exception is a cavalry charge, rule 11.7.

Yes, of course! The Cavalry Charge. In fact the Cavalry Charge rule inspired me to re-read the Rules again. At first, I didn't realize that an Inf Company had to be Activated Adjacent before it could Assault Move into an Enemy unit's hex. I've got it now. Thanks.

There will soon be Vassal support for Fall of Empires. In case you are interested.

I would be very interested in learning the Infantry Attacks system by playing a game with an experienced player using VASSAL. I own Infantry Attacks, 2nd ed., Fall of Empires and Winter's Battle. I could use the help because this is the first Tactical board wargame that I've played in about 20 years, so, I'm quite rusty.

Winter's Battle is already playable on Vassal, as it gets its pieces from August 1914.
