PG, best maps! - JayTownsend - 09-13-2021

Out of all the games I own, I prefer the AP's (semi-rigid/semi glossy card-stock, laminated maps) over mounted maps or paper maps of other companies.

Easy to use with plexiglass and don't make the boxes too heavy. They don't tear like paper maps and they don't get dinged like mounted maps. They can even be wiped off, if you spill something on them.

You can also use Painter's tape to prevent them from shifting.

Really? I didn't know that. The few times that I did tape PG maps I used removable double sided tape to do the deed. My big worry is fouling the maps with tape residue.

Peace. Michael

I use sticky tac to hold PG maps in place.

Multiman Publishing went over to the same style of maps for ASL many years ago when they introduced the ASL Starter Kits.  They then redid all the ASL maps in that style.  They are thin like the PG maps and as the PG maps work well under plexi.

Re plexiglass- If anyone has seen my picture of a Crete scenario (##12 Pink Hill) on BGG, they know how scratches can ruin a plexiglass sheet. Sadly, it can become unusable. Damage has affected them with warpage.  This happened when I stored them the trunk of my car. And they ain’t cheap. Years ago, I paid about $20+/36x24” piece. These days, I’ve gone back to using nothing. The ultimate overlay might be glass, but the cost and fragility could make that idea untenable.

I’m still looking for space to play the six map scenario, let alone a 12 mapper. But I agree with    Jay and others on the superior look of the maps.

Not sure I agree with you all, My PG collection is old (like me) and the maps vary in quality. I don't mean the physical aspects they are mainly very durable,  but  the artwork in some case leaves a lot to be desired not to mention the different colours for open ground.  I believe these detract and prevent PG from gaining best maps award but do deserve an honourable mention.
IMHO ASL are the best game series maps, with OSG's Napoleonic Library of Battles about second. I await the hate  Big Grin

I don't use plexiglass.  I typically use a poster frame:

https://www.amazon.com/MCS-Original-Poster-36-Inch-6-Pack/dp/B01F4NJNMS/ref=sr_1_8?crid=13BDXHZX0RL4R&dchild=1&keywords=poster+frames+24+x+36+inches&qid=1632025379&sprefix=poster+frames%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-8

It has the advantage of having removable sides, cardboard in back, and a thin bit of clear plastic.  They travel easily.  It is relatively inexpensive - despite the link that I used above, you can get a single one from Michaels, Office Max, or Office Depot.  The only minus is that sometimes the sides are a bit of a pain in the ass to get on.

I recommend using transparent photo corners on the cardboard in back so that you can place the maps appropriately.  Since most scenarios are are rarely larger than a  1x3 or 2x2 map arrangement this will meet most of your requirements.  On those rare occasions where you have a larger number of maps, you un unusual map configuration, you can actually connect two together.

Anyone else ever try this?

RE: PG, best maps! - Schoenwulf - 09-19-2021

I have actually connected two of the poster frames together in the past by just overlapping side channels onto each board side. But no more, Vassal is great for those multi-mappers; I used it recently for a 7-map scenario. There was no way to cover that as they were all side-by- side, and my game table would have been big enough anyhow. It is so nice to be able to zoom in and out  on Vassal as needed.

RE: PG, best maps! - Juiceman - 09-20-2021

If you are looking for a double sided tape try a Removable Repositionable Tape, such as 3M 9415 or an equivalent brand.  It has high tack on one side and low tack on the other.  Might be a bit expensive per roll, would test out before you use it on your maps just to be on the safe side, would also double check the high adhesive side on your table, the high tack side might not be as easy or clean removal as the lower tack side.

Personally I have not used it on my PG maps, have known other gamers in the past who have used it.

I generally like the maps in the newer games but I am not a fan of the color palette used for the maps in the North African theater. Good but not great.

My favorite series maps are those from Combat Commander. Not the prettiest but I never had a question about terrain.
