Gentlemen,
Under victory conditions the Americans need to exit at least 10 steps off the south (not north) map edge per the introduction.
There should be 1xM7 and 1x18 off board artillery factors. Hence special rule 4.
The map orientation is correct. Just because he is on the defensive the German player is free to take a woods hex north of the road if the situation presents itself.

By the way, the only reason I thought the orientation may be wrong was because there's only one hill the Germans have any real hope of holding. It makes sense that Germans can still gain a minor victory even if they lose that hill.
