Saipan:LVT's - campsawyer - 11-13-2012

I am a bit confused with the different LVT's and there types in the SSR's. In the rules LVT 4 are noted as an APC, but the LVT A1 and A4 are not noted. My assumption is that they are APC's and not tanks, is this correct?

Second, if this is true then they will need Marine leaders to active them to move, again is this correct?

RE: Saipan:LVT's - JayTownsend - 11-14-2012

LVT 4 is the only APC one step unit, LVT A-1 and LVT A-4 are amphibious armor (AFVs) support two step units. Some call them amphibious tanks but for PG terms we will conderside them AFVs so no double counting of steps with them, as they have very weak armor but good gun support.

LVT 4 = APC
LVT A1 & LVT A4= AFV

LVT 4 & LVT A4 are open top.
LVT A1 is closed top.

LVT 4 = 1 step units.
LVT A1 & LVT A4= 2 step units.

Jay, Thank for the reply. I believe your first item is the important on the A1's and A4's are tanks and not APC's. What threw me off was the counter icon was the same as the LVT 4, making me think that it was an APC. The second point I did see in the SSR's and the third is a good one as I had to look twice at the backside of the LVT4 and see that they are in the army colors.

One more on LVT's, the SSR states that it can transport platoons, does this include artillery and mortars?

Mortars for sure, I'll have to research if Artillery would fit or not but I don't have any scenarios that use both presently.

AP Mike did forget to change the symbol on the LVT A-1 & A-4 to armor, as I did receive an email about this today.

I am thinking the AT gun and jeep in scenario 1. Can they go in the LVT-4?

RE: Saipan:LVT's - JayTownsend - 11-14-2012

Alan, they are to be loaded into the two LCVP in the first two scenarios.

RE: Saipan:LVT's - campsawyer - 11-14-2012

One other consideration is that your field commander is "easy pickin's" for Japanese AT fire whilst he is on a LVT-4 or LVCP. In scenario 1 the Colonel got nailed by a long range shot from the 47mm AT. Nasty stuff, many LVT-4's we left in the water not even making to the beach.

RE: Saipan:LVT's - JayTownsend - 11-14-2012

On one of those beaches 100 LVT's got taken out, Leader Casualties were almost 50%, they were the first guys targeted. Saipan is very bloody.

Next time hide your Colonel in one of the stacks, so even you don't know where he is!

Let me know the progress of your scenario?
