Honoring Our Best, Vol. 20

Wargames allow you to bring history to life, and sometimes to actually rewrite the history books. Given the inspiration for his username, it is only fitting that TheDoctor did just that during his 32 battle conquest of Cassino '44.

On June 22nd TheDoctor beat back the last Allied attack and stood proudly amongst his victorious Axis soldiers atop Monte Cassino. The past had been bloodily rewritten, 17 victories to 12, and the Allied advance through Italy died with it.

TheDoctor, in recognition and commemoration of your accomplishment, you are hereby awarded this ribbon:

This ribbon is an adaptation of the Monte Cassino Commemorative Cross, which was awarded after the battle to the Polish II Corps soldiers by the Polish Government in Exile.

Congratulations, TheDoctor!

Second Annual PG-HQ Awards

I'm a few weeks late with these due to vacation and getting the kinks worked out of our new forums, but that doesn't make it any less awesome.... the Second Annual PG-HQ Awards have been released!

Did you receive an award? beast013 did... four of them! Congratulations buddy, it's fair to say that Year 2 was your year!

I came 'last' in 2012 !

Of course, coming last does have its wn kudos in some areas ?

Also, not all my 'accolades' show on my membership HQ page.. such as the Xerses or whichever one it was for the longest one ? Or was that intentional.

So to sum up, I had one of the longest ones and came last. Cool !

(edited 2012-06-28 04:11)

Generally speaking, yes. But sadly I do believe the record shows that yours was a solo play, make of that what you will! ;-)

There are no awards for runner-up and second runner-up. For those slots you only get your name in the article. :-)

2012-06-28 04:11

Shad, I think you posted as I edited ss the rest below:

I love the awards! Even though I didn't win anything. I look forward to these every year. :D

2012-06-28 21:17

You got close! Runner-up and Second Runner-up once each. :-)

2012-06-30 15:20

As for me, ever the bridesmaid never the bride...not even an award for the best one liner in an AAR?

2012-06-30 15:37

not even an award for the best one liner in an AAR?

If only they had one for the best looking PG player eh Wayne :-)

If we had a Best Old Geezer Gaming Couple award you two would be a lock! :-P

2012-07-10 16:34

Well, this is indeed a surprise. Since this is for the Longest Wind award, I'll keep it brief like to thank Shad for the great work, the Academy, my mother, my 1st Grade teacher Ms. Jameson who said... (Music Playing... time to leave the stage)

War of the Worlds

I have just finished adding War of the Worlds to the PG-HQ Library.

Please note that the Martian OOB is invisible, and this is not a bug. Rather, I am still working on the Library upgrade and newly added units don't show up on the old system.

For more details regarding this OOB issue, hop over to this forum thread.

Honoring Our Best, Vol. 19

While Panzer Grenadier's big box games grab all the glory (and shelf space), there are a number of excellent modules quietly waiting to be conquered. Matt W seems to have made it his mission of sorts to tackle these secondary campaigns.

On June 17th Matt W claimed his third medal when he became the first man in history to complete the Go for Broke campaign!

Matt W, in recognition and commemoration of your accomplishment, you are hereby awarded this ribbon:

The colors and their widths of this ribbon come from a cross-section of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team's upper arm insignia.

A reproduction with a bit of background history can be seen: here.

A photograph of an actual patch can be seen: here.

Congratulations, Matt!

2012-06-26 06:34

This one was a mission of mine ever since the supplement was announced. The most decorated unit of the American Army was composed of people who, if they were stateside, would have been kept in concentration camps. The memory of these men is important to me. Completing the campaign was just one way to bring their dedication to country back to the forefront.

My first brush with them came from Avalon Hill's Anzio where the 442nd was a separate unit. It caught my interest and I have had the chance to visit with some of them in the past.

Oddly enough the other unit I have kept in touch with was the Red Tails. Seems I have a penchant for those whose dedication to the country exceeded the country's dedication to them...

The medal is perfect! I could not have designed it better. Thanks!!

Sounds like perfect material for a nice article, Ward. Get on it! :-)

The fourm is a great idea. As this is a PG driven site, I think it adds to the product, more specifically, the use and growth of PG. Keep up the great work Shad!

2012-06-01 10:01

Glad to see this happen. Completely agree with the reasoning laid out in the "killing the community..." article. There's no point in having BGG forums per individual PG installment and, personally, I find Consimworld to be an antiquated train wreck of a forum.

Thanks for putting together the site and the forums.

2012-06-01 11:33

Many thanks, Shad. This site's always been a terrific resource/hangout. The forums are going to add even more to it.

Thanks for all the time and work you put in on this site!

2012-06-01 18:07

Oh great... Another forum to keep me from work. Now I have to come to China, hunt you down and kill you.

Seriously this is a tremendous addition to the site. It will generate a lot more interaction amongst the membership.

I can't believe you found the time to do this!!!

2012-06-01 21:47

I can't believe you found the time to do this!!!

The key was patience. If I had attempted to integrate a forum even a year ago it would have ended in a big, ugly mess. But my programming, while still novice, has made a lot of progress and I was finally ready to try to bring in a mature forum system.

We're using mybb which is a really strong, relatively well-coded package that was mostly painless to align with the existing site. In the future I hope to enmesh them more deeply, but for now I am delighted just to see people using it. Time is on our side! :-)

2012-06-13 02:31

Finally . . . A place where I can kick back and kibbitz with the actual PG community with no trolls or bitter old men to haunt my weary late nights. Great job, Shad! This might actually pull me away from Netflix a couple nights a week.

There's an old dog I haven't seen in a long while! :-) Your expertise is always appreciated, my friend!

Thanks Shad, glad to be here. It's been a tough year and a half and I needed a lot of downtime, but I'm finally getting back to the point where the gaming bug is biting again. Hope to start posting some replays soon.

Great work, but I would love to read some AAR's for these. It is a great loss that all these are played without them.

2012-04-29 17:26

What's the provenance of the ribbon colors? I presume it has something to do with fighting cancer . . .

2012-04-29 17:54

Nope these are the town colors for Targu Frumos.

2012-04-29 18:19

Matt W remembers! The first RoSo medal was claimed in late November, 2011. At the time I said:

Allow me to preempt any sniggering about the ribbon colors by pointing out that they come directly from the Targu Frumos Coat of Arms!

I should have been able to link directly to a News Post Archive rather than dive into the database to retrieve that comment text though... one of these days I'll get around to adding that... :-)

Honoring Our Best, Vol. 17

When asked about the Siegfried Line, 2nd Lt. beast013 responded "Fixed fortifications are monuments to man's stupidity" and then promptly beat the Germans straight back to Berlin, tidily wrapping up his campaign on March 21st.

Ribbon design explanation: smack in the center of the Siegfried Line is a region called Saargebiet. They flew a blue-white-black tricolor from 1920 to 1935 when they rejoined Nazi Germany via popular vote. I could not find any real medals directly related to the SL fighting, so a regional theme was good enough for me.

2012-04-24 21:23

Also worth noting that with this medal (#5) beast013 has moved beyond campsawyer and mike perryman (4 each) to become our most decorated tour of duty veteran.

He also has another campaign in the bag for which a medal will be awarded later this week. :-)

2012-04-26 18:24

Ribbon looks great - thanks Shad!
