Introduction

The failure of the attacks west of the Matanikau on the 21st and 22nd led General Sebree to alert the 8th Marine Regiment to pass through the 164th Infantry and assault on the 23rd. Again the attack would be preceded by a long bombardment of Japanese positions.

Conclusion

Once again, the attack again went nowhere. General Sebree concluded that the positions could not be taken without undue casualties. The impending departure of the worn-out 1st Marine Division would so reduce American strength that a resumption of the offensive would have to wait until January 1943.

Additional Notes

Elsenborn Ridge or Cassino '44 may be used for the U.S. Army units.
