I have always played this way.

This could be a risky gamble in this specific case if the picture is from an actual game in progress. I don't see any German troops which could harm the American platoon with Direct Fire and thus the American platoon could self-activate in the next American activation phase and move to 5821 to try to eliminate the German leader on a die roll of 9 or more.
