I notice that 2 previous AARs for this scenario indicate that the order of battle for the American side includes M3 Lee tanks in their play-throughs.

I think that the game designer intended that the M3s that are in the order of battle for this scenario are actually M3 Halftracks, not M3 Lee, or M3 Stuart tanks, and have played it that way in shared, online play once already.

Is my assumption correct?

Yes. The Lee and Stuart are listed as such in the setup instructions.
