[FiAx] First Axis #3 - Slovak Setup
I wanted to try something different and I decided to try a very aggressive Slovak setup.

The Slovaks are to defend the bridge dearly and to try to deny the Hungarians from crossing the river unharmed.

The 37mm AT gun are set up in 1011 and 0906.
The NHP in 0905 can fire at any far south crossing and can shoot at 0808 if needed.
The other NHP is in 1011 to protect the bridge and can shoot at the Hungarian engineers if they shoot from 0610.

Please feel free to comment and leave suggestions.

Thanks!

Here are the remaining pictures from the game. They were taken after turns #1, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20.

I thought it was going to be a Slovak victory after turn 8 but the situation changed dramatically very,, very quickly.

The Slovak surrendered after turn 22 when an Hungarian major victory became inevitable.

I will try to post an ARR Saturday.

Picture after turn 20. It looks like there is a limit of 5 pictures per post.

It seems there is. Sorry, that's the default setting. I've just upped it to 20 attachments which should be enough for all but the porn stars. Wink

Carry on!
...came for the cardboard, stayed for the camaraderie...

RE: First Axis #3 - Slovak Setup
Just got home and looked at the VC's and in checking them, I can now see the crux of what would be my initial set-up plan.

I would have concentrated the whole Slovak force around the bridgehex instead of stringing them out along the river. In fact Mr H, I told you about stringing out defenders in that FoF set-up Q. Bad Man !

The bridge has to be captured for any sort of Hungarian win. But by concentrating the Slovak defenders around it, you also gain the benefit of having your maximum fire in one place and that, in a place that the Lazlos have to advance to.

So what if they get all their force over the river ? They still have to get the bridge and that will be the Slovaks best chance of inflicting plenty of casualties as the enemy advance. With equal morale and the Slovaks getting the advantage of sitting and waiting to take their first pops, I would say it is their best chance. Of course, here and there you may have to fire brigade that group, but thats what defenders do.

Have not played this one yet though.

Not having the book with me on vacation, but getting the idea from Vinces post. I would have concentrated more around the bridge. The group to the south of the bridge is in an expose position that cannot help the couple of units on the bridge. The guys to the north are even more out of the way. I would have them positioned in southern end of the woods northwest of the bridge as well as dugin between the bridge and the woods, to keep the Hungarians from getting a nice firing position. As for defending the river, let it defend itself. It looks to be a minor river so they can cross anywhere, but it will take a couple of turns to do that, so it will slow them down a little. If there is any OBA that would be a good time to get a shot or two at them. Other than that let them slug it out with the dugins at the bridge.

My concern with letting the Hungarians cross the river unopposed is they could encircle the Slovak position within 8 turns.

The 1x8 + 1x15 OBA may not sound terrifying to one accustomed to lead German troops but my limited experience as a Slovak and Ecuadorian leader suggests such a powerful OBA has a good chance to decimate my troops. I chose to keep open the option to retreat to the far west town, perhaps incorrectly.

I rated it a "3" but a strong "3" as the Slovak had options to counter-attack when they had a local superiority. I also suspect it plays better ftf than solo.

I'd be curious to see pictures of your setup and how the game progressed if you and Wayne ever decide to try it.

Don't tell me afterwards I did not warn you about the OBA.

Are there VC's that relate to crossing the river?

Yes.

From memory:
The Hungarians must control the bridge hex and have more undemoralized steps than the Slovaks west of the river for a minor victory.

The Hungarians must control the east-west road and all town hexes next to it for a major victory.
