Why use infantry AT weapons?
Why would you want to use infantry AT weapons in an assault? You only have a 50% chance of using them and you could could end up doing nothing if you don't make the roll.  Then your chances of killing are low.  Why not take the normal assault value, especially if you have more than one unit and a leader present?

It might have been better if those units with infantry AT weapons got a +1 column on the assault table when fighting against tanks.

I think you have the order of option wrong. I understand all the infantry types roll for the possibility, those who make the roll have the option of using them. They would then get either an AT shot, or could participate in normal assault combat.

No, I don't think so as rule 11.5 (4th Ed.) says: "On each result of 1 through 3 there is no effect and its combat is complete."  That means to me if it fails the roll, it is done and cannot participate further in the assault.

In the Invasion of Germany book it says that the Infantry unit that makes its roll get to do both regular assault and take the AT shot.  But the roll needed to get AT is only 5 or 6.  This rule actually makes more sense consider this is a whole platoon fighting.

My experience with infantry AT is about 50/50. Depends on how many units you have in the hex.

RE: Why use infantry AT weapons?
I believe we had this discussion long ago. I am pretty sure the consensus was either/or.

I think I remember it being debated again during the 4th ed writing and the consensus was either/or there as well.

Infantry AT gives a single unit a chance for a kill. Also, infantry AT generates kills, assault is often just morale checks. It's very situational, imo.

Against an armor value of 0, there is a 1/2 x 12/36 (16.7%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 21/36 (29.2%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 1, there is a 1/2 x 15/36 (20.8%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 15/36 (20.8%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 2, there is a 1/2 x 16/36 (22.2%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 10/36 (13.9%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 3, there is a 1/2 x 15/36 (20.8%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 6/36 (8.3%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 4, there is a 1/2 x 12/36 (16.7%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 3/36 (4.2%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 5, there is a 1/2 x 9/36 (12.5%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 1/36 (1.4%) probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 6, there is a 1/2 x 6/36 (8.3%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 0/36 (0%)probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 7, there is a 1/2 x 3/36 (4.2%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 0/36 (0%)probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 8, there is a 1/2 x 1/36 (1.4%) probability of causing exactly one step loss and 1/2 x 0/36 (0%)probability of destroying the target/
Against an armor value of 9 or more, it is ineffective.

Before using a special infantry AT fire, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well do ya, punk?

I was also under the impression you had to decide to roll for AT OR do normal assault. What you guys are saying is that they can roll for AT and if they don't get it they can still normal assault? If so I'd agree that is way more useful. I also questioned the use of Inf AT weapons in assault.

Korean War games have Bazooka Teams that stack for free! No questions asked, they are there is knockout tanks/AFVs/vehicles/bunkers.

And are also a good soak off unit in assault stacks/combat.

So come over to the dark side and play PG Korean War games!Wink
