So did you actually find the areas with a specific game, like Elsenborn, and then reverse time to 1944? Or something else?

No, I just checked to make sure that the distances on the map layouts corresponded roughly to the distances on Googlemaps. If there was a huge discrepancy I rearranged the maps. Often, I'd see a pattern where a designer seemed to be operating on the erroneous assumption that each hex was 100M rather than 200M, and thus the distances between towns were twice what they should have been. That was the main thing Googlemaps helped me fix.
