Crossing a River and Assaults

Can units that are on a major river hex using an engineer unit to help them cross, assault from that hex into an adjacent enemy occupied hex?  if so, is it correct to assume they still my pass the river crossing roll?

Just had this occur in our game  and Tony and I agree Yes they can assault and yes they have to roll to get across the river
