For all of you who may be despairing: You might consider just contacting a Vassal player and having them help you through one game. Most of us would be quite happy to help you get over a few turns.

I know a couple guys in Finland who played the self-study course together.

Then we taught the mechanics to three other members of our group. And apparently well enough, since the one newest to PG is currently pushing me towards the Monastery, with five battallions against my three...
For encouragement, if anyone wants to play large battles, with turn or two per night, I heartily recommend slodging through the Vassal studies. Usually we even can't use voice comms when playing, but still manage.
