(Rules) Section of Assault - Andreas - 06-18-2018

12.51 Leaders says:

Only leaders in an assault hex may influence units there. Leaders in adjacent hexes may not. Leaders in the assault hex may direct units in adjacent hexes to enter the assault hex, but may not influence them in any other way if they don't enter the assault hex.

I've found some previous clarifications here and there but for the sake of further clarity, is the following true:

  1. A leader outside an assault hex in an ajacent hex can't assist units in the assault hex in their morale checks.
  2. A leader outside an assault hex in an ajacent hex can't activate units in the assault hex for recovery and help them with morale increase.
  3. A leader outside an assault hex in an ajacent hex can't activate units in the assault hex at all.
  4. But (surely?) a leader outside an assault hex in an ajacent hex can activate a subordinate leader in the assault hex who then can activate units in the assault hex.
Many thanks in advance!

1 True
2 True
3 True
4 False. A leader outside the hex can't effect units (including leaders) inside the hex.

What he CAN do is order units outside the assault hex INTO the assault and that can trigger the assault to activate.

All that a leader outside of an assault hex can do is send units in. Since it is a separate activation from those in the assault hex, units entering this way would need to assault on their own. It is tactically better to have a leader in the assault hex activate units in the hex and activate units to enter the hex, that way they can assault together.

RE: (Rules) Section of Assault - richvalle - 06-19-2018

Is that so? We've always played that units entering the hex can trigger an assault.

All I see in 4th ed rules are:

"This initiates an assault (or reinforces an existing one)."

Ahh, found it.

12.3 Voluntary Combat
If an activated unit enters a hex which was already occupied by friendly and enemy units at the start of the moving unit's action segment, or if the turn begins with both sides' units in an assault hex, then the active player may choose whether or not to attack with those units this turn. If he attacks, any units that moved into the hex this turn, plus any undemoralized friendly units and leaders that began the turn in the assault hex and have not activated this turn, may attack if desired. Not all units must attack. However, all enemy units in the hex defend as one combined strength.

richvalle's answer is correct.

Many thanks for your clarifications.

That basic stuff is very important to get straight right from the start.
