Scenario EdIV017

This scenario is something of the reverse of #14 with a mixed force of a battalion of Heer Mountain troops and a company of Finnish Infantry attacking a Soviet-held hill of broken rock. The Soviets may be evacuated by the armored patrol ship Shrerch (using the Udarnyi counter).

Soviets set-up as per instructions on the single hill complex in the middle of Board 2 of AK. Four INF units are designated to move to the East to be evac'd by the Shmerch. This leaves 6xINF + 2xHMG + 2x82mm + 1x76.2mm to hold the hill.

The Finns head East to engage the "retreating" Soviets taking some OF as they skirt between the hill complex and a broken rock outcropping. The Finns are disrupted by long-range DF from the Shmerch. This allows the first Soviet INF platoon to be evacuated.

Elements of the 2nd Mountain Division move to engage the Soviets. 81mm and OBA fire is disappointing - pathetic in fact. For several turns, the Heer attempt to use their incredible leadership to combine DF into the Soviets on the hill (but not dug-in due to terrain limitations), but this fizzes for several turns.

Somewhat ironically given the scenario intro, it is only after the German oberstleutnant is DD'd that the Germans seem to "wake up." A couple of disruptions allow the Germans to approach/assault the first of the HMG/INF Soviet hexes. In the meantime, incredibly the 2x82mm survive through four rounds vs. a 24-col assault. The Heer somewhat turn the corner of the Soviet line and now begin to mop up including a '6' roll on the 30 column in an assault against the other Soviet HMG+INF. Early successes by the KOM eventually turn into judicial murder as two successive morale checks fail.

The Finns catch up with the 3xINF of the Soviets at the water's edge. Using their leader combat bonuses, they overwhelm the Russians, though another unit does embark as the Shmerch D's a Finn platoon.

Meanwhile, the Germans clean up the hill assaults with the usual carnage that accompanies demoralized units suffering compound morale failures and/or "free shots."

Soviets were able to evacuate four steps (2xINF platoons), but suffered 21 step losses and all control of the hill. The Axis suffered only two step losses. Hence, a Major Axis Victory.
