Scenario WoaP016

This scenario is a very good one to highlight the Germans mobile forces against the rather static Soviet units. But the Soviets do get a chance to inflict some tanks losses as they have deployed a number of 76.2mm guns as AT weapons. This will have a good chance against the lighter armored PzIII's and short gun PzIV's. But the Germans did not come unprepared, that also have good OBA and mobile mortars to keep up with the tanks. Infantry is mounted on SPW's so they will be able to get into the battle quickly. The Soviets have the victory conditions on their side, the Germans must control the whole road to win, there is no other option for them. So the Soviets must just absorb the German attack and try to get one unit onto the road. It sound hard for both sides but it was quite fun to try to figure this one out.

The Soviets setup in a foward defense on the road, with most infantry and 76.2mm dugin to inflict the maximum damage as the German enter on the road. A second and third line are positioned about a half a kilometer and a kilometer and a half behind the first. These other two take advantage of some of the scarce cover for trees, towns and some fields. Concentrated fire will be the key to slow the Germans and force them to attack the masses of Soviets.

But the Germans, with there mobile force, advance on the board on the northwest edge. This minimized the Soviet OP fire and allow the tanks to use the cover of the woods to attack the second and third Soviet defense lines before having to tackle the main line. The Germans make it on the board and around the woods, but are surprise by long range 76.2mm AT fire, knocking out two steps of PzIII's before German OBA fire silences the guns. The German infantry deploys to take on the dug in Soviet infantry and quickly overruns the defensive line in a small field north of the road. This allows a gap to form between the main defense line and the third line.

From here the German tanks race south to capture the first road hexes. A second group overran the third line and opened the road for the lighter PzII's and Marders to look to get off the east edge. Meanwhile, main force engaged the Soviet main defenses. German OBA slowly destroyed all the 76.2mm guns but not before two more steps were lost. One group of Panzers was hit advancing on the main headquarters of the Soviets, then assaulted by some daring Soviets. The Germans threw in the PzIVE's to support, but they to were hit by Soviet Molotov cocktails and one step was lost. Quickly the German Major stabilized the situation by shifting a HMG and SPW251 to the assault. This reduced the brave Soviets.

One last band of Soviets tried to hold the western road hexes but as group of mounted grenadiers and PzIII's over ran and destroyed there dugin positions with the help of OBA. The last hex was stubborn as Soviet LT 10-0-1 was well dugin with his HMG and INF and put up heavy fire on the advancing grenadiers. PzIII's advanced to put fire on then hex but the 81mm mortars did the job with a step loss on the HMG and demoralizing the INF. Soon after the PzIII's over ran the remnants of the Soviets. After that the Germans position to block any Soviets from approaching the road to ensure the major victory.
